CHAPTER 6

Leslie had to take a quick step back to avoid colliding with a stylish Black woman holding a pastry box stamped COFFEE.

The woman raised the box above her head to protect it, sending her box braids flying around her face. She stopped and stared at them, looking utterly astonished. “Bryan? You’re showing someone the unusual animals room?”

Leslie had never in her life seen anyone look more defensive than Bryan did at the woman’s words. He bristled like a wolf. “Yes. I am.”

Leslie waited to see if he was going to introduce them. The COFFEE woman also seemed to be waiting for that. When it became clear that he was not, Leslie awkwardly said, “Hi. I’m Leslie Chiu. I… um…”

She trailed off as she realized that since she’d promised Bryan she wouldn’t mention the chicken run crash, she had absolutely no explanation for why he’d let her in on the big secret. From the slightly panicked dart of Bryan’s eyes, he was realizing the exact same thing.

The COFFEE woman’s surprised and curious expression melted into an oddly mischievous look. Her voice quivered with what Leslie would swear was suppressed laughter as she said, “I’m Everly Sawyer. Pleased to meet you.”

Everly tucked the box to her chest and offered her hand. Leslie shook it. Everly had a nice firm grip.

“So why exactly did Bryan decide to show you the unusual animals?” Everly inquired.

Leslie wasn’t going to touch that one. She looked at Bryan.

If he was a cat, he’d be puffed to twice his normal size and hissing like a tea kettle. He made a sound that was more like a growl than a word, then muttered, “Velvet and I fell through the roof of her chicken run, so she already knew.”

“Ah ha!” Everly exclaimed. She was definitely enjoying teasing Bryan. “And exactly how did that come about?”

Leslie was torn between wanting to defend him, being relieved that the secret was out, and wondering exactly how much of the real story Bryan would be okay with revealing. She decided that the safest thing was to let him do the talking.

A handsome Latino man in a white vet’s coat strode into the corridor, calling out, “Perfect timing, Everly! Gremlin’s owner can’t get him into the carrier, so she canceled. I have the next half hour free…”

He stopped short, staring at Leslie, Bryan, and the open door to the unusual animal room. “Um… Hello?”

Leslie wasn’t sure exactly what was so hilarious about the situation, but Everly clearly would have been rubbing her hands together with glee if it hadn’t been for the pastry box. “Leslie, this is Angel. He’s my fiancée, and he’s a veterinarian here. Angel, this is Leslie Chiu. She knows about the magical animals because Bryan and Velvet fell through the roof of her chicken run.”

Angel blinked. “How did that happen?”

A big white man whose red-gold hair and beard made him resemble a modern Viking opened the back door. He was followed by a teenage girl with flaming red curls who was clearly his daughter, and a tall white woman whose dark hair was streaked with silver.
